Successful operation and acceptance of ISA requires highly visible, legible, logical, and credible speed signs that can be read by man and machine. Our analyzes have shown that signs are missing, and adjustments are needed. Signs that are crooked and soiled also require attention.
Signs that need to be adapted in terms of design are, for example, the beginning of the built-up signs. The start of the sign officially means 50 km/h and the end of the sign is 80 km/h. To a camera and the machine translation, these signs fall into the 'advertising' category and the start sign has the same characteristics as the normalized street sign. An international approach is expected with the European standard. Beginning of the built-up signs, such as the concept designed on the right, would match this idea and the needs of the automotive industry. Because ISA does not only act on observations of assets, but can also do so on the basis of area data, it is good to map out the data of speed areas and make it available. This must be kept up to date, reliable and complete.
